Five municipalities from the Algarve and three from Alentejo distinguished for family-friendly practices

Municipalities are among the 84 recognized as "Autarchy + Family Responsible"

The Chambers of Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Faro, Loulé and Tavira, in the Algarve, and from Almodôvar, Mértola e Ourique, in Alentejo, will be distinguished with the green flag of “Autarchy + Family Responsible”, in a ceremony that will take place on November 25th, in Coimbra.

This distinction has been awarded by the Observatory of Family-Responsible Local Authorities (OAFR), since 2008, and aims to «create positive synergies for all national municipalities», as can be seen on the OAFR website.

The award aims to «give visibility to municipalities that stand out for their family-friendly practices and enhance the experience gained by some for the benefit of others».

The Observatory's mission is to «promote, with local authorities, the sharing of knowledge about the needs and problems of families, for the implementation of policies that respond to them in a comprehensive manner, in order to favor a cohesive social fabric and guarantee generational renewal and the country's sustainability», he explains.

To assess the municipalities, the OAFR launched a survey of 132 municipalities based on ten areas of action, including support for maternity and paternity, support for families with special needs, basic services, education and training or housing and urbanism.

Areas such as mobility and transport, health, culture, sport, leisure and free time, cooperation, institutional relations and social participation were also part of the survey's questions.

In this 13th edition, 84 municipalities were distinguished, based on 2020 data.

The green flag handover ceremony will take place on the 25th of November, at 16:30 pm, at the FEFAL Foundation Auditorium, in Coimbra.
