200 athletes will compete in the VII Algarve International Meeting at the Albufeira Swimming Pools

Competition is one of the most important on the national swimming calendar

The VII Algarve International Swimming Meeting takes place from 12 to 14 November, at the Municipal Swimming Pools in Albufeira.

This competition held in a short swimming pool (25 meters) is one of the most important in the national swimming calendar. The event will have a format of knockouts, finals and direct finals in absolute regime held in five sessions.

«In 2019, this competition had a warm reception from the public and from the athletes, so Albufeira will host the meeting again, after the one-year break, given the high risk of pandemics from last year», says the City Council.

This year, the seventh edition of the Algarve International Swimming Meeting will count on the participation of the absolute national team, with around 200 athletes from 42 clubs, including 37 national ones, of which Sport Lisboa e Benfica stand out. and Sporting Clube de Portugal, as well as two clubs from Spain, one from Singapore, another from Mozambique and one from Malawi.

José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, points out that this event, the largest held in this area in the last decade, will be an excellent preparation for the World Swimming with Down Syndrome – DSISO to be held in 2022.

The Municipality has "indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure prepared to host large events, staff up to the challenges, good weather conditions and hotel capacity to welcome teams and companions, whether in the case of isolated events or in the case of sports internships", he says the mayor.

The mayor also believes that this sport can have a great impact on the image of Albufeira as a destination for sporting activities.

The VII International Swimming Meeting of the Algarve is recognized by FPN and FINA as one of the qualifying events for the main national and international competitions, such as the National Championship in short pool to be held between the 26th and 28th of November, in Leiria, and the World Championship in short pool that will take place between the 16th and 21st of December in Abu Dhabi.

The competition is organized by the Algarve Swimming Association (ANALGARVE), with the support of the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN), Futebol Clube de Ferreiras and the Municipality of Albufeira.
