Three schools in the Algarve win the Gandhi Education for Citizenship Award

30 schools were distinguished at national level

The Rio Arade (Lagoa), Bemposta (Portimão) and Paula Nogueira (Olhão) school groups received the Gandhi Award for Education for Citizenship, which was presented last Tuesday, October 12, in Lisbon, in a ceremony that counted with the presence of António Costa, prime minister, and Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, minister of Education.

These three groups of schools in the Algarve were part of the 30 awarded, at national level, in the scope of this award that «aimed at recognizing and distinguishing schools that develop educational practices and citizenship projects that promote the development of essential competences for citizen education, with respect for human dignity. in the exercise of full citizenship, solidarity with others, cultural diversity, inclusion and democratic debate».

The “Escola Gandhi” Seal “distinguishes schools that encourage active participation in the construction of more just, solidary, egalitarian and inclusive societies, within the framework of democracy and the defense of human rights”.

Being a “Gandhi School” also means “being a school that teaches to be, know and listen to others, a school that promotes well-being and non-violence and a school that gives freedom to creativity and divergent knowledge.

The initiative, promoted by the General Directorate of Education, is aimed at students in primary and secondary education, and the projects presented can be written or multimedia documents, artistic productions or community projects.
