«Long years» later, works to replace the Arieiro Bridge in Aljezur have already begun.

Investment is 460 thousand euros

The works to replace the Arieiro Bridge, on Estrada Nacional 120, in the municipality of Aljezur, have already started, announced this Monday, 18 October, Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).

The project began last Friday, the 15th, representing an investment of 460 thousand euros. This bridge is located just outside Aljezur, just before the crossing to Praia da Amoreira road.

The purpose of the work is to increase the bridge's flow capacity, which will be completely replaced by a single span structure.

Ao Sul Informação, José Gonçalves, mayor of Aljezur, explained that the extension of this section "has been requested for many years", since the current infrastructure "restricts traffic".

When it rains, there are also problems, with frequent flooding of this area.

According to IP, «the works involve the complete demolition of the deck, the existing wall-pillars and part of the existing abutments and wing walls, and the construction of a new single-span deck measuring 15,05m between axes, using beams prefabricated, prestressed, supported on stirrup beams to be built on the back of the existing abutments».

In addition, "the construction of reinforced concrete walls is planned at both ends of the work".

With this new solution, the road platform will have a width of 9,70 meters, accommodating a carriageway measuring 6 meters, two shoulders measuring 0,60 meters and two service walkways measuring 1 meter. The deck will be equipped with safety guards and metal guardrails, fixed to the border beams at the ends of the deck.

Taking into account the flows and movements of fauna in this region, a dry walkway will also be built, 1 meter wide and 0,3 meters high.

As a result of this work, traffic will be «conditioned by resorting to alternate traffic, by a temporary detour, during the construction work of the new deck».
