Sisters Francisca and Matilde Jorge are in the semis of the pairs of the Loulé Open

In the singles, the surprise of the day was the elimination of second seed Viktoria Kuzmova

Sisters Francisca Jorge and Matilde Jorge won their second consecutive victory and qualified this Thursday, October 7th, for the semi-finals for pairs of the Loulé Open Ladies.

Playing side by side for the fourth time on the international circuit, the two sisters from Guimarães got around Ukrainian Ganna Poznikhirenko and Indian Prarthana Thombare to win 4-6, 6-0 and 10-7 in a match they had the support of several young people from Loulé who joined the occasion.

With this Thursday's triumph, Francisca Jorge and Matilde Jorge — who are the only Portuguese players still in the tournament — qualified for the second consecutive week to the semi-finals of an international tournament. To reach the first final as a double, the national doubles champions in 2018 and 2019 will have to defeat the first seeded ones, Marina Bassols Ribera and Olga Parres Azcoitia.

In the singles, the surprise of the day was the elimination of second seed Viktoria Kuzmova. World number 156, the Russian tennis player (who was top 50 WTA two years ago) couldn't muster arguments to counter Spanish Marina Bassols Ribera (294th), who won 6-3 and 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals .

The pre-designated fifth, Jessika Ponchet, also fell before the Russian, who yielded by 6-2, 6-7(8) and 6-2 to the Belarusian Anna Kubareva.

Harmony Tan, Chloe Paquet, Ellen Perez, Natalija Stevanovic, Simona Waltert and qualifier Angela Fita Boluda all grabbed the remaining singles quarter-final spots.
