In Mértola, hunting is synonymous with economy, tradition and, from today, Friday 22nd until Sunday 24th, celebration. The Hunting Fair is back in this Alentejo town, more precisely in the Expo Mértola Multipurpose Pavilion, this time in a format already very close to “normal”, with the return of shows but, above all, of the gastronomy section, where the they can find tasty and much-requested delicacies, which promise to attract people from Alentejo, but also from the Algarve.

Ao Sul Informação, Mário Tomé, Mayor of Mértola, recalled that, a year ago, the pandemic situation was getting more complicated and it was not possible to hold the event in the traditional way.

Even abdicating some aspects, such as shows and taverns, «we had the courage to give this encouragement to the hunting sector, which is so important to Mértola and suffered a lot from the pandemic, and we kept the event».

"This year, we returned to the traditional format, albeit with some constraints," he added.

The fair will respect all DGS recommendations and will have specific hygiene and safety rules, including the mandatory use of masks, limited entrance control and the existence of disinfectant gel devices throughout the pavilion.

The full program of the event will have the usual high points, which, as Mário Tomé pointed out, are almost all related "with direct hunting actions".

«I have to highlight the riding, but also the Iberian Trophy and the Jump Hunting Championship, as well as some moments of the fair, such as the exhibition of falconry and rabbit hunting with dogs», he said.

"We will have a considerable number of gunsmiths, who can be found right at the entrance to our new multipurpose pavilion, where the fair will take place this year," he added.

As for the taverns, the local authority agreed with them «a set of rules to be followed, issued by the General Directorate of Health».

In other words, people will be able to count on the typical cuisine of Mértola, served safely. “We ask those responsible for the spaces that the offer be as much as possible consisting of game dishes”, highlighted the mayor from Mertolense.

Thus, those who visit the fair can immediately enjoy partridge soup, "a very traditional dish", but also other delicacies based on this and other species, such as the hare, wild rabbit, wild boar and the deer.

In other words, «all the conditions are met» for the event to take place.
