Owners of controversial avocado plantations in Lagos forced to restore legality

Frutineves company informed that it will ask for the annulment of the decision

The agricultural company that saw it failed a controversial 128-hectare avocado plantation, in the municipality of Lagos, has two months to present an implementation project that includes the measures imposed by the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, with a view to «replacing legality».

Frutineves, the entity that promotes the agricultural exploitation, has already been notified that it has two months, until 15 November, to "present the project for the implementation of the imposed measures" in an order of the vice president of the Algarve CCDR, where the "Measures" are listed. of Minimization and/or Compensation Measures, necessary to reduce or offset the impacts caused by the project", following a Unfavorable Environmental Impact Statement (DIA).

"The impositions of these measures concern water resources, biodiversity, archaeological and architectural heritage," added the CCDR.

Meanwhile, a legal representative of the company informed this body "of the intention to file an Administrative Action with a view to the annulment of the decision".

This is a highly contested project and which, despite having failed the environmental assessment, being therefore prohibited from moving on to the execution phase, is already implemented on the ground.

Since January, several entities have taken very critical public positions in relation to this undertaking. The first alerts arrived from Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations, namely Zero and Regenearte (Association for the Protection and Regeneration of Ecosystems). Later, the subject came to Assembly of the Republic, through the PAN and the Left Block.

All of them raised questions about the sustainability of this large-scale project, namely in terms of water resources, but they also pointed out the fact that the installation was completed even earlier. of the Environmental Impact Assessment process to begin.

The criticisms gained another relevance from the moment the CCDR of the Algarve issued the unfavorable DIA.
