CCDR Algarve chuba agricultural project for the production of avocados located in Lagos

The need to guarantee "sustainable management of water resources" was at the root of the failure

The Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), in its capacity as Environmental Impact Assessment Authority, issued an Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) unfavorable to the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) of the agricultural project for the production of avocados located in Lagos, in the parishes of Luz and Bensafrim and Barão de São João, with a production area of ​​128 hectares.

The bodies that make up the EIA Assessment Committee, responsible for spatial planning, environment and sustainability, took into account, in their opinion, «the need to ensure the sustainable management of water resources, especially in a sensitive area given the fragility of the Almádena-Odeáxere aquifer, also considering the region's necessary alignment with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals».

The unfavorable decision has already been communicated to the promoters, adds CCDR Algarve, in a note sent to the editorial offices.

The Public Consultation on this project took place during 30 working days, between December 14th and January 26th. 291 comments were received through Portal Participa and 13 were sent directly to the CCDR email address. it was still
received, by mail, an entry subscribed by 362 people. Of these comments, 276 were unfavorable and only 13 were favorable.

The non-governmental environmental organizations Almargem, the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN), Sustainable Water Platform (PAS), Quercus Regional Nucleus of Algarve, Regenerarte, Association for the Protection and Regeneration of Ecosystems, Society, expressed their opposition to this project. Portuguese for the Study of Birds (SPEA), Zero and the Glocal movement Faro.

According to the Evaluation Committee's report, the representative of the PAN Algarve's Political Committee “expressed his disagreement”.
