The Chamber of Castro Marim placed biodegradable bag dispensers for dog waste in various parts of the municipality, in particular in urban areas, «with the objective of raising awareness and appealing to contribute to the maintenance of hygiene and health».
In a note sent to the newsrooms, the municipality reminds that "the waste of pets represents a problem of hygiene, cleanliness and health in urban areas, especially in paved and/or landscaped areas", which led the municipality to launch an action of awareness on this matter, designated as the Conscious Citizenship Project.
In a first phase, the project involved the placement of bag dispensers at various points in the county.
The Chamber of Castro Marim recalls that “canine waste, unlike the waste from other domestic animals, does not have fertilizing characteristics. As they are rich in nitrogen, they contaminate the soil and water tables, ending up being harmful to the environment».
On the other hand, "in the urban environment, as they decompose slowly and are often abandoned on public roads and other spaces for collective use, they are a source of parasites that put public health at risk and potentiate the transmission of diseases to other animals", he adds. .
With this project, the municipality also intends to «contribute to reducing the production of disposable plastic waste through the use of biodegradable bags, thus reducing the ecological footprint of plastic waste, considered one of the biggest environmental problems of the XNUMXst century».
The Castromarinense autarchy also emphasizes that «proceeding to the immediate removal of waste produced by pets, on roads and other public spaces is a civic duty and an obligation of animal owners. Failure to comply with this obligation constitutes an administrative offense punishable by a fine, under the terms of the Municipal Regulation of Solid Waste, Hygiene and Public Cleaning of the Municipality of Castro Marim (RMRSHLPCCM)».
