Jorge Sampaio was "one of the greatest men in Portugal", says candidate Luís Gomes

The former Head of State "was always at the side of those who had a less expressive voice"

“A man of integrity, serious, both in his personal life and in his political life. A man of consensus. One of the greatest men in Portugal». This is how Luís Gomes, head of the PSD list to the Vila Real de Santo António City Council, considers the former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio, who died today at 81 years of age.

"It was with great sadness and regret that I learned of the death of the former President of the Republic", says the Social Democratic candidate, adding that "Jorge Sampaio has always been guided by righteousness and managed to maintain national unity, even in the most complicated moments of our country.

Outside the political field, the former Head of State "has always been at the side of those who had a less expressive voice and was a staunch defender of human rights, now as President of the Global Platform for Syrian Students", he further stresses.

Luís Gomes ends by saying that «in this hard and difficult moment, I can only address my most heartfelt condolences, firstly, to Dr. Maria José Ritta and, secondly, to the children, Vera and André».
