Os five specimens of tortoise, rehabilitated by the Porto d'Abrigo of Zoomarine (Center for the Rehabilitation of Aquatic Specimens), were released in the Local Protected Landscape of Fonte Benémola, in Loulé, last Thursday, 9th of September, in what is another action of environmental and ecosystem preservation in the municipality.

These tortoises, which the Rehabilitation Center named Picasso, Quasimodo, Ramil, Splinter and Switch, belong to the two endemic species of tortoises in Portugal: leper Mauremys e orbicularis emys, respectively the Mediterranean tortoise and the striated tortoise.

This action to return the specimens to their wild environment was agreed between the Department of Nature Conservation and Forests of the Algarve, «which suggested this protected area» to Zoomarine's Porto d'Abrigo «as a suitable place for their release», and the Loulé Municipal Council's Environment Division “which accompanied and supported this action on the ground”, explains the Loulé municipality.
