Cacela Velha will have "the traditional dryland orchard exchanged for giblets"

The game-visit “The traditional dryland orchard exchanged for kids”, taking place on the 2nd of October, at 17 pm, in Cacela Velha, is the proposal of the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) to mark the European Days of Heritage 00.

In an initiative for families and the general public, the visit invites you to discover the «importance of the carob, almond, fig and olive trees in the landscape and in the socio-economic fabric of the Algarve».

The event is held in partnership with the Center for Research and Information on Heritage (CIIP) of Cacela, the Várzea de Cacela project and the In Loco Association.

“Fig, almond, carob and olive trees constitute the traditional dryland orchard that is an identifying element of the Algarve's cultural landscape”, explains the VRSA municipality.

In its complex simplicity, and adapted to the soil and climate conditions of the Algarve's Barrocal, the dryland orchard “guaranteed for centuries the enhancement of the landscape and natural resources and ensured the livelihood of the families who took care of it”.

Along a route in the floodplain of Cacela Velha, and through a game, participants "will get to know the trees that characterize the dryland orchard, their fruits, their conservation, uses and historical importance in the region's economy", he concludes. the municipality.

The initiative is limited to a maximum of 12 people, and interested parties must register by calling 281 952 600 or by email [email protected].

The event will be held in compliance with the control and safety standards defined by the Directorate-General for Health, within the scope of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The activity will be held outdoors, and the use of a mask during the visit is mandatory.
