Castro Marim fire is "out of control" and with no end in sight

Mayor gives account of "large" material damage

This is because “the wind is still very strong, the heat is high and the humidity is low”.

«At lunchtime, everything was more or less under control. But then the strong winds sent the fire shooting in several directions. At the moment, it has already moved to Cacela [in Vila Real de Santo António] and to Mata da Conceição de Tavira and is already on both sides of Via do Infante», he said.

The A22 was, moreover, closed to traffic for hours, creating long queues on the EN125 and at the exit of Tavira from the highway, such as the Sul Informação witnessed.

In some cases, those affected are young families or couples, who have been investing in agriculture for years in the interior of the municipality.

There was also “a workshop in Cortelha that was totally burned”.

Throughout the afternoon, the televisions revealed a warehouse, with agricultural machinery and tools, tractors, which burned down. A house attached to the warehouse, vehicles, carob that were already picked up and stored in the warehouse were also consumed by the flames.

Francisco Amaral also reported “two accidents with firefighters' vehicles” and “a firefighter was injured”.
