A concert by Ana Moura at the former Faceal factory, in Paderne, on the 19th (21:30 pm), the awarding of medals, the presentation of the book “Albufeira – Formation of tourism and the future after the Pandemic”, the inauguration of equipment and works (20th), the commemorative fireworks show and the Prova de Mar, at Praia dos Pescadores (21st), mark the commemorations of Albufeira Municipality Day, which is marked on the 20th of August.
The date symbolizes the delivery of the Charter of Charter to Albufeira, in 1504, by D. Manuel I. This year, due to the pandemic, as happened in 2020, the event includes special security measures, as indicated by the DGS. So that everyone can follow this moment, «the program has a format adapted to the new reality we are living, with the transmission of all the initiatives in livestreaming», announces the municipality.

It all starts on the night of August 19th, with a concert by Ana Moura, at 21 pm, in the premises of the former Fábrica da Faceal, in Paderne. On the eve of the municipal holiday, the fado singer comes to Albufeira to present her seventh album, entitled “Andorinhas”, which she describes as a “symbol of freedom and emancipation, of creativity in its pure state, a refusal to be successful, a declaration of will of the future”.
The music video for the theme was recorded in the Algarve, with the artist appearing dressed in an Algarvian coat, a kind of popular-wear coat that covered the women entirely.
Tickets cost 10 euros and are on sale at FNAC and Ticketline. The event has a maximum capacity of 600 people, a number that does not require public testing, according to DGS rules.
On August 20, a municipal holiday, the day begins at 9:30 am, with the traditional Flag Flag in the Town Hall, with the presence of members of the Executive, Municipal Assembly, Parish Councils and representatives of military, civil and religious entities.
The ceremony counts on the Toque of the National Anthem by the Band of the Sociedade Musical and Recreio Popular de Paderne and Guard of Honor by the Municipal Firefighters of Albufeira and Fanfarra.
The Solemn Session for Attributing Medals for Good Services to municipal employees with more than 15, 25 and 35 years of service, in the gold, silver and bronze degrees, respectively, one of the highlights of the program, is scheduled for 10:00 am, in the Auditorium Municipality of Albufeira.
This will be followed, at 11:00 am, in the Main Hall of the Town Hall, the launch of the book “Albufeira – Formation of tourism and the future in the post-Pandemia”, by Sérgio Palma Brito, senior analyst Tourism and Air Transport, former general director of the Portuguese Tourism Confederation (2007-2009), among other important positions, with a long professional career dedicated to the causes of Tourism.
In this work, the author systematizes important memories and documents linked to the development of the municipality and the region, which portray what Albufeira was like before the opening of the airport in Faro and from the 25th of April to the transformations of the 90s, it also addresses issues related to tourist urbanization in the coastal strip from the 60s to the present, the structural transformation of the tourism market and a perspective on the future of Albufeira in the post-pandemic period.
The afternoon is reserved for the inauguration of municipal works and equipment. At 12:15 pm, the inauguration of an Electric Vehicle Charging Station (PCVE) will take place on Avenida 12 de Julho, in Ferreiras. It is a normal speed charging station (PCN), with two sockets for charging two vehicles simultaneously, with 22 kW of power each.
This is the ninth PCN installed in the municipality, to which is added a quick charging station (PCR), located in the industrial area of Vale Paraíso, the latter with three types of plugs, which allows the charging of all types of electric vehicles .
The installation of PCVE is one of several measures that are part of the Municipality's mobility policy, which aims to promote energy efficiency, the reduction of polluting emissions into the atmosphere and the respective decarbonisation.
This will be followed, at 12:45 pm, by the visit to the requalification works of the Sports Field at EB1/JI and EB2,3 in Paderne.
The program continues, at 17 pm, with the inauguration of the requalification of Jardim de Montechoro, one of the most emblematic green areas in the city, located on the north side of Avenida Sá Carneiro. The intervention, worth 00 thousand euros, focused on the lake, which the Council of Albufeira says will be «now endowed with effects of great visual impact, improving accessibility, planting new plant species, replacing the pavement, laying a new one. urban equipment and lighting'.
The inauguration of the Montechoro Garden will also serve as a stage for the presentation of the book commemorating the 30 years of Motoclube de Albufeira, which, in this way, joins the celebration of the municipal holiday.
At 18:30 pm, the inauguration of the “Jardim dos Sentidos” will take place in the parish of Guia, one of the winning proposals of the 2019 Participatory Budget, authored by the citizen Carlos Alberto Teodósio Rosa. It is about the creation of a new leisure area, aimed at people of all ages.
The work, which involved an investment of 266 thousand euros, is located in an area of 4570 square meters, in the eastern and northern surroundings of Escola EB1,2,3 in Guia. The new space includes game tables, geriatric space, playgrounds with musical and sensory equipment, slides and inclusive areas, as well as an adventure trail.
As part of the project, the existing water line was restored, a bed of aromatic plants was installed and informal resting areas were created with associated furniture, a grass amphitheater and internal circulation paths.
With vegetation adapted to the climate of the region, it has a “dry source” with a set of dynamic fountains inserted in the pavement. All this is joined by water games, a set of playful and interactive equipment, roughly between the grass amphitheater and the water line, which include floor jets with sensors, water cannons and spraying arcs.
The program on the 20th ends with the Municipal Fireworks Day Commemorative Show, which starts at 23 pm, with eight launching points that cover the entire municipality and allow you to watch the event in safety and tranquility.
The Câmara Albufeirense stresses that it is «an immersive, unprecedented show, which aims to convey a message of hope for the future and affirmation of Albufeira as a “Destination of Emotions”». The show's original soundtrack will be broadcast live on Kiss FM radio.
The last day of the celebrations, Saturday, August 21st, is totally dedicated to Sport. At 10:00 am, Praia dos Pescadores hosts the 15th Sea Trial in Albufeira, an initiative integrated within the scope of the XIV National Open Water Circuit of the Portuguese Swimming Federation.
This is an organization of Futebol Clube de Ferreiras with the support of the Municipality of Albufeira, Portuguese Swimming Federation, Algarve Swimming Association and Ferreiras Parish Council.
