Castro Marim invites you to spend an “End of Afternoon on Salt”

Registration is open until 31st August

The Municipality of Castro Marim proposes to spend an “End of Afternoon on Salt”, in the second edition of this initiative, which takes participants to the discovery of the salt making trade on the 2nd and 9th of September.

In Salina Félix, in the Sapal de Castro Marim and VRSA Nature Reserve and after a guided tour where the process of artisanal salt production is explained, the “new salt workers” «will be able to go down to the small butchers and collect the salt manually, using the techniques ancestors that experienced salt workers taught them», explains the Chamber of Castro Marim.

The traditional sea salt from Castro Marim «results from the combination of the saltworker's work with the action of the tides, the sun and the winds and is not subjected to any further treatment, being naturally white and shiny. Also the fleur de sal does not undergo any type of processing, it is dried in the sun and then packaged, maintaining the flavor and moisture of the sea», adds the municipality.

This initiative, continues the municipality, «is part of a strategy to enhance and promote the salt producer and, consequently, salt, which is one of the ex-libris of Castro Marim».

Providing this contact of proximity and familiarization, «it hopes to increase and boost the marketing of local products in the tourist chain».

The local authority recalls that, in 2020, Castro Marim also managed to see the name “Sal and Flor de Sal de Castro Marim” legally protected (DOP – Protected Designation of Origin).

Registration is open until the 31st of August, through the email [email protected] or the telephone number 281 510 747.

The “Fim de Tarde ao Sal” is an action organized by the Municipality of Castro Marim and Associação Odiana, integrated in the Bandeira Azul 2020 program and framed in the candidacy “Patrimónios de Castro Marim: Valorization and Promotion of Local Producers and Endogenous Products”, with reimbursement by CRESC2020, the PADRE project, supported by Portugal and the European Union, 70% co-financed by the FEDER.
