The University of the Algarve, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES) and the Municipalities of the Algarve sign, this Thursday, 8 July, at 15 pm, a contract-program to increase the number of vacancies in Medicine in the Algarve.
The moment will take place in the Grand Auditorium of the Campus de Gambelas, in Faro.
With a view to implementing, strengthening and expanding the teaching of Medicine in the region, AMAL (Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve) will make an investment of 600 thousand euros/year in all components of the health area in the Algarve region, namely equipment, research and development, health service responses and higher and postgraduate training in this area.
"The increase in vacancies began in 2020/21, going from 48 to 64 vacancies, and is expected to reach 96 vacancies in 2025/26, contributing, in the long term, to improving the quality of healthcare provided in the region, as well as attracting and fixation of health professionals in the Algarve», says UAlg.
Simultaneously, the MD PhD Program will be launched, a joint program between the University of Algarve and the Champalimaud Foundation that aims to train the next generation of medical scientists.
«The program, pioneering in Portugal for its double degree (MD + PhD) aspect, is designed based on the best practices at the international level, providing students with the opportunity to obtain fundamental medical training while developing research skills that will allow them to develop as clinicians-scientists, making the interface between medicine and science», explains UAlg.
