Portimão Home Hospitalization Unit is already operating

In this first phase, it is possible to monitor five patients simultaneously

The new Home Hospitalization Unit of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) has already started operating in Portimão. This project, started in 2019 at the Hospital Unit of Faro, has now started in Portimão, also offering users of Barlavento this differentiated and proximity healthcare service.

In a first phase, it is possible to monitor five patients simultaneously, within a radius of about 30 minutes/30 kilometers away from the hospital.

Home hospitalization, as a model for providing health care at the patient's home, appears as an alternative to conventional hospitalization where “the patient is hospitalized, with access to all kinds of care and monitoring that they would have at the hospital, but in the comfort of your home, in the company of your family”, explains Nuno Vieira, coordinator of the Home Hospitalization Unit of Portimão.

"This type of hospitalization allows for greater humanization of care, and especially an appreciation of the active role of the family in the patient's monitoring process, which will reflect in functional gains and patient autonomy, since the environment itself family is progressively adapting to their needs ” concludes Alexandra Ferreira, the nurse responsible for this unit.

Patients who meet a set of clinical, social and geographic criteria that allow them to take advantage of this hospitalization model have at their disposal all the differentiated care they would have at the hospital, carried out by a multidisciplinary team that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionist, technical assistant, available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

CHUA says it is “working to, in a short time, be able to increase the assistance and safety aspect of patients in Home Hospitalization, through the introduction of telemonitoring for these patients, an innovative concept at a national level, which will allow for more detailed monitoring and surveillance allowing to expand the range of patients eligible for this type of hospitalization”.

The public presentation session, which took place this Monday, the 31st, was attended by the president of the ARS Algarve Paulo Morgado, the vice-president of CCDR Algarve José Pacheco, the director of the Center for Social Responses of the Centro Distrital da Social Security, and the presidents of the Municipalities of Silves and Portimão, Rosa Palma and Isilda Gomes, respectively, who were received by the Board of Directors of CHUA.

In operation since May 2019, the Home Hospitalization unit of Faro it has already admitted 333 patients, 85 in 2019, 195 in 2020 and 53 in 2021. The degree of patient satisfaction has been “extremely positive with 90% very satisfied and 10% satisfied with their home care experience”.
