The “Costas a Mexer” project ensures the good posture of children in the Algarve

Project started last week, in Faro and Tavira

Ensuring the good posture of children in the Algarve is the main objective of the “Costas a Mexer” project, which the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve is promoting in schools in the Algarve.

The first sessions of the project took place last week, at EB 2,3 D. Afonso III in Faro and at the Escola da Conceição de Tavira and Cabanas, for the 4th grade classes.

The ARS Algarve School Health teams, physiotherapists and occupational therapists are carrying out health education sessions aimed at 4th and 5th year children from the Algarve Region School Groups, «with the aim of improving postural habits and promoting behaviors and healthy lifestyles among the youngest”.

«Over the next few months, health professionals will visit the various schools in the region, in a pedagogical way and using informational materials, including games, leaflets, books and a didactic video, to raise awareness among children, teachers and guardians for the importance of adopting appropriate postures in different daily contexts», revealed the ARS.

Specialists will warn, for example, for "the correct use of backpacks, giving special focus to storage and the maximum recommended weight, to prevent the appearance of spinal pathology."

In the same context, «using theoretical and practical examples, they will also promote healthy habits and lifestyles, such as regular physical exercise, playing outdoors, healthy eating, adequate hydration and adequate rest, and importance of reducing sedentary time and excessive exposure to digital screens'.

The project, which will be implemented by teams from the three Health Center Groupings (ACeS) in the region, aims to reach around 8900 children in the 4th and 5th grades of schools in the Algarve.
