The Council of Aljezur believes that there are "objective conditions for a general lack of confidence in the county" and demands that both the resident and the floating population be accounted for in the calculation of the incidence of Covid-19, the municipality defended this Monday, in a take. of public position.

This municipality was one of those who went back on mistrust, given that it presented more than 120 cases per 100 inhabitants in two consecutive biweekly assessments – in the second assessment it was above 500.

José Gonçalves, president of the Chamber of Aljezur, who already had manifested "surprised and displeased" with the retreat into distrust decreed by the Government for the council, signs a public position statement sent today to newsrooms, where the municipality considers that the decision "is unfair and highly penalizing for a population that has been able to resist and maintain an attitude of responsibility, discipline and sacrifice" .

"Once again we see some economic activities being victims of restrictive measures that do not originate in their activity, despite all their efforts to strictly comply with the rules that were imposed on them," says the statement.

At issue is the fact that the vast majority of cases that have recently emerged in the municipality are linked to agricultural activity and the housing conditions of migrant workers who are recruited, which are often very bad.

«Thus, and because we understand that there are clear and objective reasons, we demand that the evaluation criteria be revised, for the future», reads the position taken by José Gonçalves.

The municipality's position is justified by the «territorial, socioeconomic, demographic and housing specificity of the municipality, which has long been reported by local forces and authorities», namely in «years of meetings» on temporary accommodation within the Irrigation Perimeter of Mira.

If the criteria are not revised and given the fact that Aljezur hosts "a considerable number of floating population, we may be constantly in a situation of fragility and vulnerability, compromising our already very battered local economy," added the City Council of Aljezur, in the signed communiqué by its president.

The municipality therefore demands that "immediate measures be taken to support the local economic fabric of Aljezur", that there is "reinforcement of urgent vaccination of the entire population of the county" and that the rules on accommodation for workers approved by the current Government, in 2019.
