Algarve has 17 more beaches with Golden Quality

Algarve is the region of the country that won the most flags, from one year to the next

The Algarve was the region of the country that won the most beaches with Golden Quality, in 2021, compared to last year. In all, there are another 17 bathing areas in the Algarve that will fly this award awarded by Quercus, bringing the total to 93.

According to the environmental association that awarded this flag that distinguishes the bathing water quality of Portuguese beaches, in the 2021 bathing season, 392 beaches were identified with Gold Quality in Portugal, "6 more than in 2020".

«Of the awarded beaches, 329 are coastal beaches, 52 are inland beaches and 11 are transitional beaches. This year, the increase in Quality Gold beaches in the Algarve region stands out (17 more awards), which represents an increase of about 18%», illustrated Quercus, in a press release.

Despite this strong rise in the Algarve, the Tejo e Oeste region remains the most awarded, with 100 Gold Quality beaches, six fewer than a year ago.

In the North region, the third with the most awarded beaches (72) there was also an increase (+6).

This is followed by the Azores (42 in total, less two beaches than in 2020), Madeira (30, more 7), Alentejo (28, less 1) and Centro (27, less 15 and “record holder” in the loss of awards).

In 2021, Quercus based itself on three major criteria for attributing the Gold Quality Beach rating.

The first is that beaches must have “excellent” water quality in the last five bathing seasons (2016-2020)».

On the other hand, the analyzes carried out over the 2020 bathing season must all have presented results 'better than the values defined for the 95th percentile of Annex I of the Bathing Water Directive'.

In practice, this means that the values of intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia coli they must be less than a certain value.

"In the last bathing season (2020), there may have been no occurrences/notices against bathing, prohibition of bathing and/or temporary banning of the beach," added Quercus.

The data used in this assessment are based on official public information, «taking into account only the analyzes carried out in the laboratories of the different Regional Hydrographic Administrations».

"Like last year, Quercus reinforces the need for bathers to comply with the sanitary rules defined by the Directorate-General for Health when visiting bathing areas," concluded the association.
