Anyone who sees a chameleon can participate in a campaign and become a citizen-scientist

Project aims to promote the conservation of the common chameleon, an emblematic species

Anyone who sees a common chameleon (calls eleo calls eleon) is now invited to actively collaborate through the science-citizen campaign, which calls for the recording of observations of this species.

So, anyone who sees a chameleon and wants to actively participate in this project, can do so on the project page, by sending the information to [email protected] or through the social networks of Associação Vita Nativa.

Loulé is one of the municipalities involved in the winning project of the Youth Portugal 2019 Participatory Budget – “Recovery and Investigation Center of Camaleão do Algarve” -, after having signed, on December 29, a partnership protocol for its implementation.

This project aims to promote the conservation of the common chameleon (calls eleo calls eleon), such an emblematic species, by raising awareness in the community of its importance and respective threat factors and by improving knowledge of its biology and geographic distribution, involving citizens and the scientific community.

“The Camaleão Project fits perfectly into the environmental policies of the Municipality of Loulé, namely with regard to the defense of biodiversity and our ecosystem, but, at the same time, in the aspect of environmental education and awareness of the community for these matters, in which we have a recognized work for many years. In this sense, from the first moment we were involved in this partnership, which we believe could be decisive for the preservation of this emblematic species”, says the mayor Vítor Aleixo, one of the signatories of this initiative.

The technical execution of this project is in charge of Associação Vita Nativa and has a budget of 60.000 euros.

The project will be developed for a year and will take place throughout the eastern Algarve, with, among other actions, the promotion of a comprehensive environmental awareness campaign, the creation of a "Chameleon Interpretation Center" in Olhão and the training of the Center for Recovery and Investigation of Wild Animals (RIAS), through the improvement of infrastructure, better suited to the reception of injured or debilitated individuals.

The establishment of several regional partnerships by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, through the Regional Directorate of the Algarve, which includes, in addition to Loulé, the municipalities of Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, the University of Algarve and the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.
