ICNF embargoes construction of wall, road and fence in the middle of Ria Formosa

This is not the first time that illegal work has been detected in this field

A two meter high stone wall, a ten meter wide road and a fence. All this was being built, in the middle of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, in the Cabanas de Tavira area, in the absence of the authorities. The Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), however, has already seized the work, for which no authorization was requested.

Joaquim Castelão Rodrigues, ICNF regional director, told the Sul Informação that the work was embargoed on March 17, after a complaint had been filed with this institute.

"At that time, our nature watchers went there and stopped the work," he said.

The works, which took place in an area of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, National Agricultural Reserve and National Ecological Network, included earthworks and earthworks, which would have the objective of creating a road, about 3 meters wide, to connect the top of the cliff to the level of the estuary.

According to a second complaint, dated April 2, it was also forwarded to the ICNF (and other entities), which o Sul Informação had access, vegetation was also destroyed to allow the construction of a fence about 2 meters high.

The objective of these works, according to Castelão Rodrigues, is unknown, because «no opinion was ever asked for and there is no justification for them».

"We don't know what he wants, because we still haven't been able to talk to the owner, since, when we went there, it was the contractor," added the person in charge.

This does not mean, even so, that the owner of that land is unknown to the authorities, not least because he is a "repeat offender".

Last year, «there was already an administrative infraction process, which is still ongoing», concluded Castelão Rodrigues.
