Exports increase 6,0% and imports drop 5,7% in the 1st quarter

Released the National Institute of Statistics (INE)

Portuguese exports of goods increased by 6,0% and imports decreased by 5,7% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year, released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

"The flash estimate for the first quarter of 2021 points to an acceleration in exports of goods, which will have increased by 6,0% compared to the same period of the previous year (-3,2% in the fourth quarter of 2020) and to a less intense reduction in imports (-5,7%, compared to -9,9% in the previous quarter)», advances INE.

With the release today of the quick estimate of the “International Trade in Goods” for the first quarter, INE starts the advance release of information on the quarterly evolution of imports and exports of goods, based on information collected up to 25 days after the quarter. of reference.

“Of course, the earlier release of results entails a greater probability of revisions reflecting the lower volume of primary information available, particularly about the last month of the quarter. Still, […] the flash estimate is generally very close to the result usually published 40 days after the quarter,” he says.

According to INE, the 25-day quick estimate of the “International Trade in Goods” is one of the necessary elements for the subsequent 30-day quick estimate of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and does not replace the disclosure of monthly information at 40 days, which will remain, containing more disaggregated information, by product and by country.

INE's next monthly highlight with international trade data will be released on May 10th and the next flash estimate, for the second quarter of 2021, on July 28th.
