Luís Carito was a prominent figure in the PS both at local and regional level, having been president of the council and vice-president of the Portimão Chamber

Luís Carito, former vice-president of the Portimão Chamber and former president of the PS council, will be the candidate, supported by PSD and CDS, for this municipality in the next elections. The presentation of the candidacy will be this Wednesday, March 31st, at 18:00, in the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina.

After this presentation, Carlos Gouveia Martins, president of the PSD of Portimão, and João Caetano, leader of the local CDS, will also speak to journalists, starting at 20 pm, at the Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

Luís Carito, a physician by profession, was a prominent figure in the PS at both local and regional levels, having been president of the council and vice-president of the Portimão Chamber.

It was under his aegis that many of the mega projects emerged that helped this municipality to have the second largest debt at the national level and to have recourse to the Municipal Support Fund (FAM).

Carito was also president of the Municipal Assembly of Portimão, elected by the PS, as well as a deputy of the Socialists in the Assembly of the Republic.

He was also at the head of local and regional PS campaigns, having become a candidate for PS/Algarve leader.

The now candidate of the PSD/CDS coalition for the Portimão Chamber was involved in a justice case, related to the Cidade do Cinema project, which dragged through the courts. carito is over for being acquitted, in a decision taken in January 2020, by the Court of Portimão.

The case dates back to 2013, when were arrested the former vice-president of the Chamber, as well as another councilor, an administrator of the municipal company Portimão Urbis and two people linked to the Cidade do Cinema project.

At issue was an alleged misuse of 4,6 million euros from the State, with a “fraudulent scheme”, related to the “City of Cinema” and the redevelopment of the Portimão Stadium.

The former vice president of Portimão ended up staying subject to preventive detention, while the remaining defendants only had a Term of Identity and Residence. But this situation for Luís Carito only lasted a few weeks, until he was able to stay at home, under house arrest with electronic bracelet.

About seven months later, in January 2014, even this coercive measure was eased, and Carito was able to change the electronic bracelet for periodic presentations. It was at this time that he also resumed his duties as a doctor at the Health Center of Portimão.

One of the most popular parts of the whole process took place when Luís Carito took a paper from the hands of a PJ inspector, to put it in his mouth and swallow it.
