Parish Union of Faro installs nest boxes and insect shelters

Junta wants to "awaken the ecological conscience of the citizens"

The Union of Parishes of Faro (UFF) is installing fifty nest boxes for birds and shelters for pollinating insects in the city's gardens.

The placement of nest boxes, «in addition to seeking to raise the ecological awareness of citizens, aims to provide a nesting and shelter area for birds in order to contribute to biodiversity in urban areas», according to the UFF.

As for the insect shelters, they will serve "to shelter pollinating insects, such as ladybirds, butterflies and simphids, creating conditions to reproduce, protect and winter."

According to Bruno Lage, president of the União das Freguesias de Faro, «these insects, as we all know, are fundamental for the pollination of plants and, consequently, they are agents of special relevance for the balance of the ecosystem».

The mayor considers it important to «sensitize the Faro community to the need to conserve biodiversity as one of the main drivers of sustainable development and for the existence of good urban environmental quality».

With this project, the board aims to «strengthen information and awareness about the importance of biodiversity in the community, create suitable spaces for shelter and nesting for birds, raise awareness of good environmental practices and contribute to the protection and promotion of the diversity of species from pollinating birds and insects».
