Admissions of patients affected by Covid-19 continue to rise in hospitals in the Algarve. The data released this afternoon by the District Civil Protection Commission indicate that, in the last week, there were 247 hospitalized people, to 273, that is, 26 more. 14 more admissions.

The most severely ill patients, who need Intensive Care, are now 39 (5 more than on 29 January), with 22 patients being ventilated (5 more).

The figures are also not encouraging with regard to deaths, which remain at very high numbers, precisely reflecting the worsening of inpatient cases: in the last eight days, there were 46 deaths by Covid-19 in the Algarve region.

In the week between January 29 and February 5, 11 people died due to Covid-19 in the municipalities of Albufeira and Loulé, eight in Faro, five in Olhão, three in Vila Real de Santo António, two in Lagoa and Silves, as well as one in Lagos, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira. In the remaining Algarve municipalities, there were no deaths.

Despite the worsening of the type of cases and the increase in deaths, the rate of increase in new cases has been decreasing. This week, across the region, there were 1645 more SARS-cov-2 infections, while the week before (January 22-29) there had been a further 2504 cases.

But the big leap was taken at the level of people who recovered: since the 29th of January, there have been 3885 more. Just from yesterday to today, 1896 patients were reported as having recovered.

This rise in people who have already got rid of the disease, as well as in deaths, together with a slowdown in the growth of new infections, results in a decrease in the number of active cases: there are now 3726, or 2226 fewer than a week ago.

The District Civil Protection Commission bulletin also indicates that, at the moment, there are 42 people from the Rapid Intervention Brigades, which replace employees of institutions who are sick or in prophylactic isolation, providing support in six homes in the region. It is the Porta Amiga Association, in Tavira, ACASO Association, in Olhão, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Faro, Associação Socio Cultural de Almancil, in Loulé, Home for the Elderly of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Armação de Pêra, in Silves, and also the Casa de Reposo da Guia, in Albufeira.

On the other hand, in addition to the CHUA field hospital set up in Portimão Arena, the bulletin reports that this week this Hospital Center also began to have «an extension of the inpatient and operating room, with capacity for up to 28 beds, installed in the first floor of the Hospital of São Gonçalo de Lagos». This structure, as Sul Informação reported, it allowed “accommodating non-Covid patients from the CHUA Hospital Units, thus increasing the capacity to receive Covid patients and to maintain outpatient surgical activity”.
