The Minister of Health, Marta Temido, said today that the Covid-19 pandemic will leave "a heavy trail" on the mental health of the population, stressing that there is much to be done in this area.

"Naturally, the pandemic will leave a heavy trail on what is the mental health of all of us, whether in terms of strictly balance, or in terms of deeper mental illness," said Marta Temido in the Health Commission, where she is being heard at the first regimental hearing of the year.

The issue of mental health was raised by PS deputy Hortense Martins, stating that mental health, "which many try to devalue, is extremely important."

“You can't save lives with physical issues alone. Mental health is also important to save those same lives», defended Hortense Martins.

In response, Marta Temido stated that there is much to be done in the systems in this area, namely for patients who are awaiting discharge due to lack of social conditions.

"Many of them are situations where there are no alternatives in the area of ​​mental health and, therefore, we in the recovery and resilience plan have a specific line for mental health," he said.

Among other aspects, he added: «we intend to complete the reform of the application of the National Mental Health Plan and the reform of what is the work of psychiatric hospitals, integrating them, developing psychiatric units in general hospitals and creating assisted homes for patients who they have no alternative”.
