Portuguese Press Association launches «Culture, Science and Technology» project

In addition to texts, photographs and infographics, the project also provides for the production and distribution of videos and podcasts, with digital publications in mind

This week, the Portuguese Press Association (APImprensa) started a project for the dissemination, among Portuguese newspapers, of articles on Culture, Science and Technology, authored by renowned experts in each of the areas covered. O Sul Informação, as a member of APImprensa, is one of the first newspapers to join the project.

This is one of the measures adopted by APImprensa to mark 2021 as the Year of the Regional Press.

According to the association, “this is a true public service, since the articles will be provided free of charge to newspapers throughout the country (and also to Portuguese-speaking newspapers abroad that express an interest in it), with the aim of enhancing and diversifying content, but also as a contribution to the dissemination of media literacy'.

This is why this project is this year sponsored by “Media Veritas”, another program that APImprensa is running with the support of the Tides foundation (an American organization linked to google.org), which promotes literacy among the most popular audiences. vulnerable (adolescents and seniors), fighting misinformation and so-called “fake news”.

This project has been being prepared for a long time by a team led by journalist Jorge Castilho, director of APImprensa. A team now joined by researcher António Piedade, from the University of Coimbra, who for more than a decade had been coordinating a similar initiative, although limited to scientific texts, called “Science in the Regional Press” – which, in the meantime, has ended.

As mentioned above, APImprensa's initiative is much more comprehensive, as the name of the project immediately clarifies: “Culture, Science and Technology in the Press”.

Thus, Culture, in its various aspects (Arts, Literature, History, Sociology, Music, etc), the discoveries of Science and the advances of Technology will be disseminated. Practically every day, the project will make available to newspapers texts from all these areas, authored by specialists from the main Research Centers and Universities throughout the country and abroad.

These texts, even when dealing with complex matters and with guaranteed scientific rigor, will be written in a language accessible to all, contributing significantly not only to the general public's information, but also to their training in the most diverse areas of knowledge.

In addition to texts, photographs and infographics, the project also provides for the production and distribution of videos and podcasts, with digital publications in mind.

«All these assumptions allow us to say that this will probably be the project that will manage to reach, on a regular basis, the largest audience ever in the Portuguese press, and also the one that will reach a larger geographical area - hundreds of regional newspapers covering the whole national territory and, through them, also reach hundreds of thousands of Portuguese in emigrant communities around the world», stresses APImprensa.

“Everyone recognizes that the Press is an essential pillar of Democracy. But few of those who say so give her the support she needs to survive and play her indispensable role», he adds.

At a time when the Press sector is going through its biggest crisis ever, this is yet another initiative that APIimprensa is putting into action on the ground, to support the “irreplaceable regional press in our country”.
