Airport Faro had 75,5% fewer passengers in 2020

the airport of Faro it was the one that had, at a national level, the biggest decrease in the number of passengers handled in 2020, with a drop of 75,5% compared to the previous year, according to rapid air transport statistics, released today by the National Institute of Statistics.

According to INE, “in the year 2020 as a whole (preliminary data), 100,2 commercial aircraft landed at national airports (-56% compared to 2019) and handled 18,4 million passengers (-69,4 %)".

Lisbon airport handled 9,3 million passengers, 50,4% of the total, registering a drop of 70,3%.

Considering the three airports with the highest passenger traffic – Lisbon, Porto and Faro – the Algarve registered the biggest decrease in the number of passengers handled in 2020, with a drop of 75,5%.

Considering the volume of passengers disembarked and embarked on international flights in 2020, France was the main country of origin and destination of flights (occupied second position in 2019), followed by the United Kingdom (first position in 2019), which registered the biggest reduction in the number of disembarked and embarked passengers compared to the same period of the previous year (-76,0% and -75,2%, respectively).

Spain showed the second largest decrease in both indicators and occupied the fourth position in 2020 (third in 2019).

In 2020, there was a decrease of 30,2% in the movement of cargo and mail at national airports, which reached 147.000 tons.

In an analysis of the last month of last year, INE found that 6,8 thousand aircraft landed on commercial flights at national airports, which represents a drop of 57,3%, after falls of 61,4% in November and of 51,9 .XNUMX% in October.

Regarding the movement of passengers (boarding, disembarking and direct transit), which totaled one million, there was a decrease of 74,7% compared to December 2019 (-82,1% in November and -74,1% in October ).

In December, the movement of cargo and mail at national airports totaled 15.000 tons, corresponding to a decrease of 23,1% (-27,2% in November and -28,1% in October), but maintaining the trend of recovery since April, the month in which the greatest decrease was registered (-62,6%).

Analyzing the monthly figures for 2020 for the three indicators, INE found that the largest decreases compared to the same periods were registered in the months of April and May: falls of 94,5% and 92,7% in landed aircraft, 99,4% and 98,5% in the movement of passengers and 62,6% and 55,5% in the movement of cargo and mail, respectively.

"Analyzing the number of aircraft landed and the number of passengers disembarked daily in 2020, and comparing with the same period of the previous year, the impact of the measures adopted at the level of airspace from the beginning of the second half of March in the context of the pandemic of Covid-19. Despite the recovery in July and August, the trend was reversed as of September. In December there was a slight recovery, driven by the Christmas season”, explained the statistical entity.
