University of Algarve gives Career Alumni Award to Sílvia Socorro

An honorable mention will also be given to Paulo Nóbrega Serra

Sílvia Socorro, who has a degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries, will be distinguished with the Alumni Career Award from the University of Algarve (UAlg), in a ceremony to be held on February 5th, from 18 pm, via videoconference.

An honorable mention will also be given to Paulo Nóbrega Serra, graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures – Portuguese Studies Variant.

In 1994, Sílvia Socorro completed her degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries at the University of Algarve. He completed his Masters in Aquaculture in 1997 and a PhD in Biology, specializing in Molecular Biology in 2001.

She completed a post-doctorate in Molecular Biology at the Ottawa Health Research Institute of the Ottawa Hospital, in Canada, between 2000 and 2001, and between 2001 and 2002 completed a post-doctorate in Molecular Biology at the Center for Marine Sciences, University of Algarve.

In 2013 he obtained the Aggregation in Biomedicine at the University of Beira Interior.

She is the director of the PhD course in Biomedicine and full professor at the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior, and Scientific Coordinator of the Center for Research in Health Sciences.

Sílvia Socorro leads a research group whose interests are fundamentally focused on the study of hormonal and metabolic changes associated with male infertility and cancer.

Over the years, his research activity has contributed to the characterization of the physiological actions of sex steroid hormones in reproductive tissues, namely testis and prostate. New proteins have been identified with a relevant role in controlling cell survival and death, and with an impact on the production of male gametes and tumor development.

The work of his research team has also been demonstrating the action of steroids in controlling energy metabolism, and how these changes are related to the aggressiveness of prostate cancer. A set of molecular targets with potential therapeutic applications based on hormonal activity or regulation of metabolism have been identified.

Paulo Serra graduated in Modern Languages and Literatures – Portuguese Studies Variant in 2002.

He completed his Masters in Literature, specializing in Comparative Literature in 2006 and in 2013 completed his PhD in Literature, specializing in Comparative Literature.
