EU / Presidency: Von der Leyen wants to work with Portugal for the recovery of Europe

This will be the fourth Portuguese presidency of the EU, after 1992, 2000 and 2007, and will extend through the first half of 2021

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she is "eager" to work with Prime Minister António Costa during the presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), which Portugal took on this Friday, January 1st .

In a message posted on his official Twitter account, Von der Leyen congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her work over the past six months, in which the German presidency saw its agenda occupied by issues of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Thank you Angela Merkel and the German EU Council Presidency for taking the EU forward over the past six months, in such a challenging year”, began by saying Von der Leyen.

«Good luck, António Costa and Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU. I look forward to working with you for the recovery of Europe and for the health of our citizens”, adds the President of the European Commission, identifying both leaders in the same message.

On Thursday, the president of the European Council also published a message on the same social network thanking the "extraordinary work" of the German chancellor and her presidency of the EU Council, in a "special" context, also recalling the pandemic.

«Welcome, António Costa. I count on our cooperation to advance the EU towards a post-Covid era”, said Charles Michel, in a message written in Portuguese and German, in which he identified Prime Minister António Costa and the German Chancellor.

The president of the European Parliament David Sassoli also wished yesterday, to the Portuguese prime minister, success in the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, expressing his readiness to "work together" in the European recovery.

"My best wishes for success to the Portuguese Prime Minister on his first day of the Presidency of the Council," wrote Sassoli, in a message in Portuguese and English on his Twitter account, in which he identified António Costa's account.

Portugal assumes yesterday, January 1, the presidency of the Council of the European Union, succeeding Germany, which has worked for the past six months to respond to the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

This will be the fourth Portuguese presidency of the EU, after 1992, 2000 and 2007, and will extend for the first half of 2021, preceding the presidency of Slovenia, which starts in the second half of the same year.
