Ribeira do Cadoiço «breathes new life» after being the target of recovery intervention

Almargem coordinated this project financed by the Environmental Fund and in partnership with the Câmara de Loulé

The Cadoiço stream «breathes new life», after having been the target of the “Cadoiço Vive” project, which has now come to an end «with a positive balance, according to Almargem – Association for the Defense of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the Algarve, which coordinated the project. project financed by the Fundo Ambienta, developed in partnership with the Câmara de Loulé.

Over four months, this periurban corridor was the target of an intervention, based on "a strategy for nature conservation and ecosystem renaturalisation".

«Concrete measures were taken to return this area to a more natural and prosperous state, with the renaturalization of the riparian gallery and the reinforcement of the wild fauna. In a concerted effort with different entities and with the support of the Municipality of Loulé, Almargem “rolled up its sleeves” with the application of seven natural engineering techniques, removing more than 40 tons of invasive plant species and planting 100 trees in this area. and native bushes», described Almargem.

"To increase the possible nesting or resting places for different species and the survival rate of individuals in the face of harsher conditions, 13 shelters for bats, 30 nest boxes for birds and four hotels for insects were installed", added the association .

Insect Hotel – Cadoiço Vive Project

“Cadoiço Vive” emerged from the “recognition of the great landscape and natural potential of the Cadoiço stream, from which two impressive waterfalls and rock formations stand out and which has been progressively infested by different invasive exotic flora species, with threat to the biodiversity of the place as well as the integrity of the banks of the stream».

The application approved by the Environmental Fund under the program "Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity — Improving knowledge and the state of conservation of the natural heritage" is the result of continuous work that Almargem and the Municipality of Loulé have been developing, to over the last few years, in the Cadoiço stream and surrounding area, which include «two projects from the Environmental Fund and dozens of Environmental Education activities, with particular emphasis on the event “Cadoiço em Festa”, which had two editions».

The actions had the technical and scientific support of the University of Algarve, the University of Coimbra, the Tagis Association, the Associação Vita Nativa, the company Engenho e Rios and the biologist Mário Carmo.

«Almargem and the Municipality of Loulé are committed to continuing the actions initiated in this project, ensuring the maintenance of the installed shelters and the state of the riparian flora, through concerted actions of environmental volunteering, included in the municipal environmental education program, and other relevant initiatives”, concluded the Algarve environmental association.
