Minister confirms online classes start on February 8th

Pandemic has not abated and therefore schools will remain closed

Online classes, for all levels of education, will return on 8 February, announced this Thursday, 28 January, the Minister of Education. Schools will remain closed. 

This measure was announced after today's Council of Ministers and the approval of the new State of Emergency, in the Assembly of the Republic.

Due to the fact that the pandemic has not slowed down, “off-site education is a resource that we have to resort to when we are unable to move the calendar”, said Tiago Brandão Rodrigues.

The minister also explained that support for students with special educational needs will continue, as well as food meals, given in schools, to needy students.

In addition, the network of schools for workers in essential services will continue to operate.

The period that would be the Carnival holidays (15th, 16th and 17th of February) is also suspended and there will be a reassessment, every 15 days, on the opening of each level of education.

As for the 15 days of school interruption, which last until February 5th, the objective is, in the future, to “recover” these two weeks “with classroom teaching”.

During the period of online classes, the rules applied will be the ones that were approved in July of last year.

Despite stressing that the priority is always «trying to have the schools open», minister Tiago Brandão Rodrigues made a point of stressing that now we have all» of helping to lower the numbers of the pandemic.
