Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa participates, this Monday, December 14th, in the closing ceremony of the 190th birthday celebrations of João de Deus, starting at 18:45 pm, in the Francisco Vargas Mogo auditorium, in São Bartolomeu de Messines (Silves).

This session will integrate several literary and cultural activities in honor of João de Deus, educator and poet, born in Messines.

In this context, the end of this afternoon will then be marked by the closing ceremony of the commemorations started in January – under the seal of the Presidency of the Republic – and interrupted in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which, gradually, the municipality has been resetting.

This session will feature interventions by the President of the Republic and the Mayor of Silves Rosa Palma.

The ceremony will also include two presentations: one from the children's book “Fábulas de João de Deus”, illustrated by Marta Jacinto, and another from the work “João de Deus – Immortal e intemporal”, a historiographical study by Maria João Raminhos Duarte, edited by the local authority in partnership with publisher Colibri. The session will also feature musical notes from the Guitarras de Fado project.

The commemorative program will end in Silves, at 21 pm, with the concert “If I were a Cloud João de Deus Revisited”, by the Lisbon Poetry Orchestra, which will take place at Praça Al-Muthamid. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also attend this moment.

The show, produced exclusively for these celebrations, intends to revisit the poet's work, blending his lyrics with that of his close friend Antero de Quental and tracing a trajectory between the past, present and future of poetry and Lisbon's own path Poetry Orchestra, in a tribute to the words of poets Jorge de Sena, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, surrealist António José Forte and brand new poetry by Cláudia R. Sampaio.

All initiatives will be broadcast on live stream via Facebook of the Municipality of Silves.
