Tonight snow fell in the Serra de Monchique

Forecasts by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere showed the possibility of snowfall above 600 meters

It was foreseen and ended up happening: at the end of the night of Friday, December 4th, and early morning on Saturday, the 5th, snow fell in Fóia, in Monchique, the highest point in the Algarve, 902 meters from altitude.

Forecasts by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere showed the possibility of snowfall above 600 meters.

The phenomenon is not unprecedented – it has snowed other times at the highest point in the Algarve - but it is always remarkable. Bruno Gonçalves, from Meteofontes and ExtremAtmosfera, was there, recording this video we published, where, in addition to the snow, you can see the hailstorm.

Even so, early this morning, the snow that fell during the night had already disappeared from Alto da Fóia.
