Overnight stays in the Algarve, by Portuguese resident tourists, increased 4%, compared to the same period last year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), which points to the Formula 1 Grand Prix as one of the possible causes.

This "sporting event may have been related" to this increase in the rate of change in overnight stays, compared to October last year, according to INE.

For the rest, this is almost the only good news in the tourism data for the month of October.

According to the quick estimate, the tourist accommodation sector should have registered, in that month, «1,0 million guests and 2,4 million overnight stays, which corresponds to variations of -59,3% and -63,0 %, respectively (-52,7% and -53,4% in September, in the same order). Overnight stays from residents decreased by 21,0% (-8,5% in September) and those from non residents decreased by 76,2% (-71,9% in the previous month)».

In October, «29,9% of tourist accommodation establishments will have been closed or had no guest movement (24,0% in September)».

Also in that month, resident guests will have been 647,0 thousand, which translates into a decrease of 23,9% (-15,4% in September) and non-resident guests will have reached a total of 371,8 thousand, retreating 77,5% (-73,8% in the previous month).
