VRSA gives 10 euros support to the Algarve's Food Bank Against Hunger

Municipality justifies the measure with a "worsening social scenario and an increase in requests for help"

The Vila Real de Santo António Council (VRSA) will provide 10 euros support to the Food Bank Against Hunger of the Algarve, in order to «strengthen the support provided by this institution in the municipality, which, due to the Covid-19 pandemic , there has been a worsening in the social scenario and an increase in requests for help», according to the municipality.

The measure, approved at the last Chamber meeting, is also intended to respond to the appeal made by the Food Bank that, in the absence of food collection campaigns in supermarkets, due to containment and security measures, it is prevented from collecting goods and thus face the increase in the number of families that have requested food support from partner entities».

In the municipality of VRSA, Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome supplies six Private Social Solidarity Institutions, namely, Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Associação de Beneficência Mao Amiga, REFOOD, Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, SSVP – Confederação Nª. Ms. Incarnation and the Eternal Trumpet Pentecostal Church Association.

The aim of the Food Bank is to fight waste, recovering food surpluses, and raise food items to deliver them free of charge to families in need, mobilizing people and companies that, on a voluntary basis, join this cause.

In addition to the free delivery of food, the Food Banks monitor and share the institutions' actions to fight social exclusion.

"The monetary aid provided to the association is thus crucial to strengthen the support network of local institutions and respective support to the socially vulnerable population, measures that, given the current pandemic scenario, become even more urgent", concluded the Chamber of VRSA.
