DGS says Pfizer's vaccine "will be one of the best" if results are confirmed

Graça Freitas also said that Portugal is in the procurement mechanisms for this vaccine

Health director-general Graça Freitas said today, November 9, that the vaccine against Pfizer's new coronavirus “will be one of the best” on the market if 90% efficacy is confirmed.

“If it turns out that its effectiveness is in the order of 90%, I have to say that it will be one of the best vaccines we will have, because the ones we use today not all have that effectiveness. We hope so, that the trials will come to fruition», said Graça Freitas, at the press conference to update information on covid-19.

The director-general of Health was asked about the announcement of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, which revealed that provisional data on the vaccine against the new coronavirus indicate that it may be effective in 90% of cases and that this month it will ask for its use in emergency situations in the States United.

Today's announcement does not mean, however, that a vaccine is imminent. The interim analysis, by an independent data monitoring board, found 94 infections recorded so far in a study involving nearly 44.000 people in the US and five other countries.

Pfizer did not provide further details on these cases and warned that the initial rate of protection could change by the end of the study.

Graça Freitas also said that Portugal is in the procurement mechanisms for this vaccine.

«Portugal is in the European mechanisms for the acquisition of various types of vaccine and various brands. The one that announced these results today is one of those that our country has planned to acquire», he explained.
