The Algarve was once again distinguished as the “Best Beach Destination in Europe”, in the 2020 edition of the World Travel Awards, winning the award for the sixth consecutive time – the seventh time in total.

In the 2020 edition of these awards, considered the “Oscars of Tourism”, a highlight was also given to the election of Portugal as the “Best Destination in Europe”, for the fourth consecutive year.

The Conrad Algarve Hotel (Loulé), which won in the category “Best Lifestyle Resort in Europe”, for the Monte Santo Resort (Lagoa), which was considered the “Most Romantic Resort in Europe”, and for the Dunas Dourada Beach Clube (Loulé), which won the “Best Luxury Resort and Villas in Europe.

In the view of Associação Turismo do Algarve (ATA), the award for “Best Beach Destination in Europe” means that the region retains «the preference of the main leaders of the tourism and travel industry around the world who, annually, participate in this initiative and vote to reward the best tourism offer globally».

“In a year as troubled as 2020, receiving this award and continuing to be trusted by travelers around the world is a sign of confidence in the future. This distinction recognizes not only the quality of our beaches and our offer, but also shows that the Algarve continues to be a safe destination to spend holidays, with tranquility and complying with all the rules defined for the protection of public health», believes João Fernandes, president of Algarve Tourism.

The Algarve was one of the first European regions to open the bathing season, after ensuring that all safety conditions were met.

“Strengthening the safety of the destination and regaining the confidence of tourists has been our priority since the beginning of the pandemic. European Beach destination,” said the president of ATA.

"Receiving this international distinction validates all this work and proves that the Algarve is capable of adapting to new circumstances, without tampering with the quality and authenticity of the experiences that our tourists can experience here," he added.

According to ATA, «the beauty and diversity of the Algarve's beaches, the year-round sunshine and the offer of conditions for the practice of various activities and sports related to the sea are some of the characteristics most valued by those who choose the Algarve beaches».

Among the "strong arguments" presented by the Algarve's bathing areas is the fact that there are 87 blue flag beaches in the region and 48 beaches with the necessary accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

Also “the implementation of good environmental practices with regard to cleaning and preservation of these places” and “the provision of a set of infrastructure and support services of recognized quality”.

Turismo do Algarve has sought to capitalize on «the bet it has been making, both in terms of loyalty in priority strategic markets, and in the diversification of other markets».

«Together with all those who visit us to discover our exceptional beaches, we then seek to promote a rich and diversified offer – ranging from golf, nautical tourism and nature tourism, to culture and gastronomy in the region», concluded João Fernandes.

This was one of the 21 awards collected by Portugal in this year's edition of the World Travel Awards.

In addition to the awards for “Best Beach Destination in Europe”, for the Algarve, and for “Best Destination in Europe”, for Portugal, the city of Porto won the award for “Best 'City Break' Destination in Europe”, Lisbon o de “Best European Cruise Destination”, the Azores were considered the “Best Adventure Tourism Destination” and Madeira the “Best Insular Destination in Europe”, among other awards.
