“A Terra Treme” in Albufeira, Vila do Bispo, Silves, Moura, Grândola and Montemor-o-Novo

This “A Terra Treme” initiative will take place in various parts of the country and we can all participate

The “A Terra Treme” initiative, to raise awareness of the seismic risk, takes place this Thursday, November 5th, at 11:05 am. The Algarve Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR) and the Councils of Albufeira, Vila do Bispo, Silves, Moura, Grândola and Montemor-o-Novo have already joined and will participate

The date appointed for its realization coincides with the World Day for Awareness of the Risk of Tsunami, an event instituted by the UN.

As the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority explains, "this initiative is part of the activities that are part of the National Strategy for Preventive Civil Protection and aims to empower the population to know how to act before, during and after an earthquake, making citizens aware of the fact of living in a society at risk, and challenging him to get involved in the process of building safer and more resilient communities».

The exercise comprises the practice of three simple gestures that can make a difference to those who practice them in the event of an earthquake. The action takes place for one minute, in which the participants, individually or collectively, are invited to perform the three self-protection gestures: download – protect – wait.

In addition to the school-age population, whose adherence to the initiative has been significant, ANEPC wants to "continue expanding, year after year, the reflection and debate on the issue of seismic risk and participation in this exercise to other sectors of civil society ».

In Albufeira, Escola Basica nº1, on Avenida do Ténis, has already signed up to participate in this exercise.

The Municipality warns of the fact that «Albufeira is a territory with areas particularly sensitive to seismic risk, and it is essential to be prepared to know how to face the situation and recover from it quickly».

Next Thursday, November 5th, "learn or remember the procedures you should adopt before, during and after an earthquake and organize yourself, in your home and family, to face the situation with the appropriate behavior", he argues the Municipal Civil Protection Service, which due to the current state of pandemic, emphasizes that during the exercise it is mandatory to comply with all the recommendations of the General Directorate of Health.

In Vila do Bispo, the 1st Cycle Schools and the EB 2,3 School of S. Vicente will also be associated. The municipality also challenges all residents to participate.

As the Regional Coordination and Development Commission emphasizes, «historical records show that the Algarve region is the one that, over time, has recorded the highest seismic intensities in Mainland Portugal, being this a region with particular characteristics, as well as the great urban concentration along the coast, seasonally receives an intense population flow, national and international».

In Alentejo, the Chambers of Moura, Grândola and Montemor-o-Novo were also associated. In Moura, the Basic School of the 1st cycle of Sete e Meio will receive the initiative.
