Municipal buildings in Loulé no longer have water dispensers with plastic bottles

Measure was announced on National Water Day

The Loulé Council will replace the existing bottled water dispensers in municipal buildings and will install 100 pieces of equipment that will contribute “to reduce the consumption of plastic and provide employees and citizens with water from the municipal network”.

This measure was announced last Thursday, October 1st, National Water Day.

Also on this National Water Day, Cineteatro Louletano made available on its Facebook page the documentary “Power of Pure Water”, produced by National Geographic, which follows the lives of three women and their families and provides a first-hand perspective on the challenges of access to safe drinking water.

“Water is one of the natural resources most affected by climate change. It is urgent to manage it more efficiently and we all have an important contribution to make. It is, therefore, essential to adopt a new culture of water use, with proactive measures and behaviors that promote its sustainable management, with significant reductions in waste in the urban sector, increasing its efficiency through
reduction of losses, as well as the reduction of energy used in its production and transport, which will consequently lead to economic and financial benefits», emphasizes Vítor Aleixo, president of the Loulé Council.

In a note sent to the newsrooms, the municipality recalls that, "to emphasize its commitment to this mission", the municipality "has been running, since 2018, the campaign "Here we take care of Water", which aims to raise awareness of the pressing need to save water and use this resource rationally'.

The Loulé Council also recalls that other initiatives have been carried out throughout the municipality, with regard to good water management and saving.

Among the examples listed by the city are the placement of native flora species in public green spaces, well adapted to local conditions, irrigation of some green spaces in the city of Loulé and all plots of the Social Gardens of Loulé, with reuse of spring water from Bicas Velhas, the free distribution, by its residents, of flow reducers for the taps and installation of them in various places and public spaces, or the increase of green areas connected to an intelligent irrigation system that prevents irrigation on days when there is precipitation and which facilitates, for example, the detection of leaks, reduction of losses, scheduling of watering times and times taking into account the time of year or the weather conditions of the day in question.

The Municipality of Loulé is also developing its Municipal Contingency Plan for periods of drought, a tool that aims to minimize the risks and damage caused by different types of drought, and ensure the preventive management of associated resources, in line with what is defined in the Loulé's Municipal Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
