Aljezur, through the eyes of photographer Frederico Furtado Júnior

The exhibition “Frederico Furtado Júnior | Aljezur in the 40's, 50's, 60's of the 7th century”, promoted by the Municipality of Aljezur, and which opens on November XNUMXth, in Espaço+, aims to show a relevant part of the photographic collection of this great photography enthusiast from Aljezur.

After the edition, in 2018, of the book “Aljezur 1869~1969 | Memoirs", in which many of Frederico Furtado Júnior's photographs can be seen throughout some chapters, the promoters of this exhibition think it is time to present them in the context of a classic photography exhibition (black solid wood frames with the use of passe-partout), certainly to the author's taste and, in this way, to make known, through an individual exhibition, his dedicated, attentive and relevant work».

The excerpt below, taken from the text “1869~1969 | 100 years in photographs by Aljezur” that João Mariano wrote for the book “Aljezur 1869~1969 | Memoirs", objectively synthesizes the content and purpose of this exhibition.

«However, the example that arouses the greatest appreciation and great emotion is that of Frederico Furtado Júnior (1924–1994), Mr. Furtado from the pharmacy. Thanks to his great activity as a photographer, essentially in the 40s, 50s and 60s, he left us a rich and comprehensive legacy of his Aljezur from that time».

«Shooting essentially in 6 x 6 cm format, it denoted a relevant aesthetic and documentary sense, as can be seen by the beautiful set of images he left us, in particular in the series about the unusual snowfall of February 2, 1954, in the photographs of the alleyways Aljezurenses and in the symmetries or aquatic reflections (from this collection, we had access to a considerable set of proofs of the time and even to some negatives, which allowed a digitization with greater definition, based on this original matrix). The pages dedicated to his photographs are our way of paying him a belated, but deserved, tribute», added photographer João Mariano.

And this exhibition, in its own name, «is the reinforcement of this same homage!», guarantee its organizers.

At the opening, will be present José Soudo, researcher in the history of photography, «to give us a small lesson in the history of photography and contextualize the photographs of Mr. Furtado in his time», revealed João Mariano to Sul Informação.

The inauguration of the exhibition, which will be shown at Espaço+, in Aljezur, is scheduled for 17:00 on 7 November. Confirmation is required by telephone + 351 282 997 181 until the 4th. Attendance at this inauguration is subject to the number of seats available.
