Mainland Portugal is already in a contingency situation

There are new restrictive measures

Mainland Portugal has been in a contingency situation since 00:00 today to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, and new restrictive measures are now in force.

The contingency situation regime, which was in force only in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, is now applied to the entire continent and will be extended until 23:59 on 30 September.

The Government justifies the contingency situation throughout the territory of mainland Portugal with the growth of new daily cases of contagion of the disease, the beginning of the school year and the expected increase in people in circulation, namely, in public transport in areas with high density populational.

The new rules to contain Covid-19 are to limit concentrations to 10 people, unless they belong to the same household, on public roads and in commercial establishments and the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages in service areas or at service stations of fuels.

In retail establishments, including supermarkets and hypermarkets, it is prohibited to sell alcoholic beverages from 20 pm onwards.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages continues to be prohibited on public roads, and it is also prohibited to drink alcohol outside restaurants and beverage establishments after 20 pm, except in the context of the meal service.

With the opening of the schools, restaurants, cafes and patisseries within 300 meters of the schools will be limited to a maximum of four people per group, unless they belong to the same household.

In the catering areas of shopping centers the same maximum limit of four people per group is also imposed.

Commercial establishments can only open from 10:00 am, "with exceptions such as pastry shops, cafes, hairdressers and gyms", and the closing time is between 20:00 pm and 23:00 pm, by municipal decision "according to the specific reality" in each county.

Restaurants can remain open until 1:00 am and may receive customers until 00:00 am for meals.

In addition to the rules for most of the continental territory, there are specific measures for the Lisbon and Porto Metropolitan Areas, where the risk of incidence of Covid-19 is higher due to the greater population density, with scales of rotation between telework and work having been determined presence and the mandatory delay of entry and exit times at the workplace, as well as different times for breaks and meals for workers.
