Faro: Secondary Bicycle Workshop and new cycle path are highlights of European Mobility Week

Vila Adentro and some streets in the Baixa will have no traffic on World Car Free Day

The inauguration of the Bicycle Workshop, at the Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School, and the consignment of the work on the cycle path between Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian (next to the Prison Establishment) and the Rotunda dos Bombeiros de Faro, are the two main activities of the participation of Faro on the European Mobility Week, which starts this Saturday, September 19th, and on the World Car Free Day, on the 22nd.

The Municipality's participation is reflected in two aspects: the carrying out of initiatives over four days and the organization of the World Car Free Day, on Tuesday, September 22, which culminates in a conversation on sustainable mobility starting at 21 pm in the Quintalão space and which will be broadcast online on the Municipality's social networks.

On the Car Free Day (22), a perimeter of several streets will be closed to car traffic, namely in the area of Inner Village e downtown.

Promotional actions related to sustainable mobility will also be carried out, which will be carried out by the various partners involved in the project, spread over the various areas where the activities will take place.

So, in the area of About Me, the Pinheiro and Rosa School Grouping will be represented, with the Bike Me project. The aim is to make the project known and collect used bicycles, tools and materials for equipping the bicycle workshop, appealing to the donation of these materials.

In the same garden, the exhibition stand of the Ampere ride – Electric scooters and motorcycles, University of Algarve with the project eco bike, Portuguese Federation of Cycle Tourism and Bicycle Usersa (FPCUB), with a publicity and promotion stand, offer of annual insurance and membership in the federation, if you come by bicycle to the place where the European Mobility Week takes place, and also the company Algarve By Segway with the free provision of segways.

In space backyard, on September 20th, there will be a session of Outside cinema, with the support of the Association Faro 1540, where the documentary “Why We Cycle?".

To conclude, the activities in this space will host, on the 22nd, at 21:30 pm, a talk about "Sustainable Mobility", having as moderator Professor Francisco Soares, president of the Pinheiro e Rosa Schools Grouping, and as guests representatives of the City Council of Faro, of the Regional Health Administration, of the Next, Faro Pedalar, Portuguese Federation of Cycle Tourism and Bicycle Users and the informal group Pegadas à 4ª.

In addition to these activities, online participation and consultation actions will also be developed, as a furniture paper cultural and a questionnaire for listening to the young population about mobility.

There will also be actions of theatrical awareness which will address the rules for riding bicycles and which will be addressed to drivers and passersby in the city.

 

A Association Faro to pedal will be responsible for streamlining two city cycle tours, with a route of 10 kilometers each, while the project Faro to walk, promoted by the City Council, will be responsible for walking. These activities require prior registration and follow all the guidelines of the General Directorate of Health.

At 11:30 am on World Car Free Day, 22 September, the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group will present the BikeMe Workshop's new space, offered by the Municipality of Faro to the project, at the main school, the Secondary Pinheiro e Rosa.

In this workshop, bicycles and parts donated by the community gain new life, which is like saying “new wheels”, after they are fixed. They are then made available to students, teachers or staff who use them as a regular means of transport, thus promoting a sustainable form of mobility.

The project also includes other aspects, and so on the 21st and 22nd it will also streamline the Bike(b)US, activity that accompanies students from Escola Dr. Neves Júnior from pre-determined points in the city to the school.

The BikeMe project's main objective is to change the mobility paradigm in Faro, namely contributing to the Group's students to acquire, from an early age, sustainable behaviors, promoting physical activity, health, environmental protection and mobility through gentle means, also allowing them to observe and participate in processes of empowerment and encouragement of entrepreneurship young and local.

On World Car Free Day, on September 22, at 15 pm, the City Council will also sign the consignment of the bike path work between Avenida Calouste Gulbenkian (next to the Prison Establishment) and the Rotunda dos Bombeiros de Faro.
