Six orcas sighted south of Benagil [with video]

«The animals were between 6 and 8 meters long»

Six orcas (Orcinus orca) were sighted last Friday, August 14th, about 4 miles south of Praia de Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, by a group of tourists on board a vessel belonging to the company Dream Wave.

According to this company, which operates maritime tours, "the animals were between 6 and 8 meters long". «Within the group, we were able to identify two males and four females, without offspring», he adds.

The group of tourists, who were on board the Dream Wave Insónia, had «the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic observation of these imposing animals».

The vessel, guarantees the company, "always maintained an indicated guard distance from the animals, respecting what the law and common sense require".

Orca is the largest member of the dolphin family and is a versatile super predator, which includes prey such as fish, molluscs, birds, turtles, seals, sharks and larger animals when hunting in groups, such as whales. .

Although “killer whale” is a misnomer, as it is a direct translation from the English “killer whale”, and because the animal is not a whale, it is widely used.

It is the second mammal with the largest geographical distribution area – right after man – it is found in all oceans and can weigh up to nine tons.
