There are "at this moment circumstances that justify the reversal of the last decision of the United Kingdom in relation to Portugal, which has 10 days". It was in this way that the President of the Republic stated that he did not fear that the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, at national level, could lead to the closure of the British air corridor.

Em visit this sunday to Caldas de Monchique, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa underlined that, if the eventual reversal of the British Government's decision to include Portugal in safe destinations is not justified at the level of the entire country, even less so in the case of the Algarve.

«The numbers for the Algarve are residual numbers in national terms. In general, over the last few weeks, in the increase in cases that there has been, it cannot be said that there is a decisive weight in the Algarve's numbers. There isn't!” he guaranteed.

"And even in general terms for the country, we must be careful, we must prevent, I have already said that and I think that this is also the position of the health authorities", but there is no cause for alarm, added the Head of State.

As for the recent opening of the air corridor with the United Kingdom, which has already brought thousands of British tourists to the region last week, Marcelo said: «we all know how important foreign tourism and British tourism is. It's seeing the difference in this last week, compared to what it was two weeks ago, a month ago, two months ago».

Later, before entering the restaurant in the village of Monchique for another working dinner – the eighth – with the mayors of the Algarve, the President of the Republic once again mentioned that the situation of tourism in the region, since the opening of the British air corridor , is now quite different, namely in terms of hotel occupancy rates.
