Semi-final took place in Salir, broadcast live on RTP

Festa da Espiga, in Salir, is in the final of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture, after having been one of the winners of the semi-final played this Sunday, August 24th…in Salir. 

This gala, which was broadcast by director on RTP1 and was broadcast from the village of Salir, in the interior of the municipality of Loulé, selected the Festa da Espiga as one of the 7 finalists.

«This will certainly be a moment that will remain in the history of the parish of Salir. It was with great satisfaction and enormous pride, associated with the great responsibility of receiving one of the semi-finals of this competition in Salir, that we accepted the honorable invitation of the president of 7 Maravilhas and RTP», says Deodato João, president of the Parish Council of Exit.

“This is public service. For us, it is very important to have the opportunity to promote our parish, the municipality of Loulé and the interior of the Algarve, an interior full of History, culture, gastronomy, handicraft, stunning landscapes and unique people in their hospitality». adds.

For Luís Segadães, president of the 7 Maravilhas, the semi-final "well expressed the feeling of national pride evident in all candidates for the competition", demonstrating "the strength of Portuguese popular culture, especially on a stage like the village of Salir, which hosted this event. semi-finals, in the heart of a very touristy Algarve, but one that knew how to preserve and know how to enjoy its most popular traditions».

The Espiga Festival, whose candidacy for the 7 Wonders has Reinaldo Teixeira as godfather, takes place on the spike day and is «a celebration whose origins are attributed to the pagan practice of Celtic and Roman times and also to the Christian celebration of the Feast of the Ascension» , explains the Salir Parish Council.

"On that day people went to the field and composed their branch of the cob, which was hung behind the door of the house until the following year, when it was replaced by another branch, symbolizing prosperity and luck for the crops".

Conceived in the 60s, by José Viegas Gregório, from Salirense, this festival gained a regional dimension, becoming a tourist attraction in the interior, receiving thousands of visitors who come here to enjoy the ethnographic procession, handicrafts, gastronomy, folklore , popular poetry and all the musical animation.

The 7 finalists known this Sunday will be joined by the other seven who will qualify on August 30, in the second semi-final to be held in Torres Novas.

The final, in turn, takes place on September 5, in Bragança, and will be broadcast by RTP, in prime time. Of the 14 finalists selected in the Semi-Finals, 7 heritages will be elected by the Portuguese as the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture.
