Six orange trees were uprooted in Largo da Sé, in Faro, where the concerts will take place starting today of the "F Nights". The Glocal Citizens Group Faro considers it "unacceptable" that the trees, decades old, have been uprooted "to serve a spectacle that will last half a dozen days", but Rogério Bacalhau, mayor of Faro, guarantees that the event and the controversial cutting of orange trees are not related.

Isabel Beja, member of Glocal Faro and also of the movement “For the Trees of Faro”, in statements to the Sul Informação, considers this as "an unacceptable situation for any citizen minimally informed about what is happening in the world, taking into account challenges such as climate change".

The citizen says that this cutting of orange trees, in the square where the “F Nights” will take place, “has no logical explanation. Trees pose no danger to the public. It is not understandable that they are going to uproot orange trees, to serve a spectacle that will take place for half a dozen days».

According to Isabel Beja, the Glocal Faro has already tried to contact the Chamber of Faro about the cutting of orange trees, “but we had no response from the local authority”. Even so, he guarantees, “we are not going to let this go unnoticed. “Measures will be taken, namely in a Chamber meeting, and appropriate actions will be taken to end this type of attitude”.

Cristina Grilo, socialist councilor, also criticizes this cutting of trees, since “there have already been other shows in the old town and there has never been a need to cut down the trees. I don't see the need to do this. There are landscape architects in the Chamber, there are heads with this training and I don't understand the insensitivity».

Rogério Bacalhau, on the other hand, guaranteed the Sul Informação that the 'orange trees were in bad condition. They have been removed and, when possible, they will be put back in”.

Asked by our newspaper about whether the cutting down of trees was related to the realization of “F Nights”, the mayor says that “it wasn't exactly because of that. I had asked for an intervention to be carried out in the square, with the cleaning of the orange trees, which were full of dry wood and were removed in this context».

In other words, reinforces the mayor, it was "a coincidence".

O Sul Informação he found on the spot this morning that on the “islands” where the trees were planted, so far, no chairs had been placed for the public.

In clarification sent this afternoon to the Sul Informação, the Chamber of Faro guaranteed that the trees were not cut down and that they are being treated, so that they can return to the public space.
