Higher Education students will be able to stay in youth hostels and inns

Agreement with Movijovem allows to provide another 500 beds

As an alternative to the lack of beds in student residences, due to the new guidelines of the DGS, the Government is negotiating an alternative: hostels and inns now receive students.

Since student residences will lose several hundred beds as a result of the guidelines of the General Directorate of Health (DGS), which establish a distance of two meters between beds, students will be able, alternatively, to live in hostels and youth hostels, advances the “Público” newspaper in this Friday's edition. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education is finalizing an agreement with hoteliers in the cities of Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Braga – the four cities in the country with the most university students.

According to the Secretary of State for Science and Higher Education, it is a "good marriage" between the State and the sector of hostels. “The hostels guarantee an income for a year, which will allow them to maintain the structure at a time when they suffered a loss of customers, and we managed to find a solution for the accommodation of students”, explained João Sobrinho Teixeira.
