Uber will be able to have operators across the country as of today

Uber may have operators in all counties

As of today, the Uber transport platform may have operators throughout the national territory, considering it to be an important step in a context in which domestic tourism is gaining relevance, within the scope of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In the month [July] in which Uber celebrates six years of operation in Portugal, the application will have coverage throughout the country”, can be read in a statement.

In the company's view, drivers and transport service partners in uncharacterized light passenger vehicles (TVDE) now have access to more economic opportunities in a year in which many Portuguese will spend their holidays in Portugal.

In a response sent to Lusa agency, Uber clarified that the operation will cover all municipalities.

“When we say the entire national territory, we are referring to all the councils. Right now, Uber allows any TVDE driver to operate in any area of the country”, he stressed.

Cited in the statement, the general director of the platform in Portugal, Manuel Pina, considered that the measure is a way for drivers to help local communities, noting that the application can be seen as “an economic opportunity”.

“At a time when we need flexibility and innovation to overcome the crisis, we want everyone to have access to our services, wherever they are”, he stressed, noting that Uber will not have “the same speed in all locations”.

According to Manuel Pina, service reliability in all regions will be gradually increased.

"We want to put our technology at the service of the entire country, whether to offer safer and more accessible travel, to send packages and essential goods or to support the mobility of populations that normally have less access to essential services", said the official.

According to Uber, outside large urban centers, the application will allow the registration of new partners with electric and non-electric vehicles, due to constraints in accessing chargers.

With more than three million downloads since its arrival in Portugal, Uber also recalled that, as of July 16, the platform will only accept electric vehicles in the country's biggest cities.

“The rule applies to new vehicles in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, districts of Braga and Faro regarding the main UberX service as well as the Comfort. Partners will be able to continue to add non-electric vehicles in case of replacement of a vehicle already registered on the platform or for Uber Black or UberXL services”, concluded the company, in the statement.
